I started my insurance career in 1975 as a commercial underwriter for Crum & Forster. While I was there, C&F began automating Workers Compensation on its new mainframe computers. I received my very first salary bonus for usability suggestions on that system.

Over the years I have worked as an underwriter, agent and agency owner. In 1981 I co-founded one of the first comparison rating software services. I was involved in designing systems on computers from the first PC's -Apple II's and Radio Shack TRS-80 Model III's - to Windows based systems that passed data back and forth from agents to insurance companies.

In 1995 I entered the Internet arena, and learned quickly that the Internet is infinitely different from other computer platforms. Over the next several years I had to unlearn most of the things I already knew - and I was forced to become a student again in order to effectively use the new capabilities of the Internet.

From 1995 to 2004, I voraciously pursued the craft of web design and usability. I helped create systems of all types - systems that you probably use today on some of the company web sites you have to work with.

By 2004 I was convinced my re-education for the web was complete. I had come to know exactly what works and what doesn't on the Internet. And one of the keys is that you cannot bring old programs forward and just give them an Internet screen. You have to understand the whole new set of possibilities and start from scratch.

In 2004 I launched Simply-Easier-ACORD-Forms to offer instant access to all current ACORD forms. I made it an Internet only system with the intent of adding significant capabilities over time. I built it as an Internet only, stand alone, business model so I would not have to worry about losing revenue from my existing customers.

Now this company does a great job. They employ 25 to 30 people. They have great service. Their owner is making a great living.

If they change their products and pricing to the Internet business model, first they have to pay for a major development project - 6 months to a years work costing $500,000 to $1,000,000. Then they have to change their pricing from an average of $327.50 to $150.00 per customer per year. They immediately go from making $3.275 million a year to $1.5 million a year.

For most any rational person that is the wrong direction. They have to look hard at how fast they are losing customers. The truth is most of their customers are happy and not shopping for an alternative. So the right decision for this company to make is to add more features to its existing product to keep as many customers happy for as long as possible and just not be able to sell to as many new customers.

Their choice may come down to "change and go broke fast, or they can stay the same and maybe or maybe not be around in ten years."

Heck, even with my Batchelor of Arts in Spelling, I can do this math.

What Does All This Mean to You?
